Lying On The Couch

The first option, "Lying on couches is boring", is correct. The word "lying" is used as a gerund here, meaning that although "lie" is a verb, "lying" is a noun. This is a singular noun, so saying "lying is boring" is just like saying "The book is boring" or "My cat is boring".

"On couches" is a prepositional phrase, modifying the gerund, so basically it's an adjective. It's like saying "The green book is boring", or "The book about fish is boring". In both cases, "green" and "about fish" are used as adjectives, and don't really directly affect the verb.

So it's "lying on couches is boring" because "lying" is singular, and you would still use "is" even if there was only one couch ("lying on the couch is boring"), as "on couches" only describes the noun/gerund.

Studies have shown that lying during therapy sessions is actually very common. Out of a study of over 500 therapy clients, 93% recalled specific topics that they lied to their therapist about in the past. These included denying suicidal thoughts, hiding drug use, masking criminal acts, and downplaying the true extent of their emotional suffering.

With lying during therapy sessions such a common factor, should we even bother stopping it? The answer is, of course, yes! Researchers are studying the act of lying to better foster honesty. Patients often want to discuss secrets that they perceive to be important or even shameful, but they need help in doing so. In the case of those with suicidal thoughts lying out of fear of institutionalisation, it would be a simple case for the therapist to explain the real triggers for hospitalisation. As a result, the patient would feel they could be honest about these painful thoughts. By learning how to foster honesty, therapists can create a safer environment for their patients.

As a licensed tour guide, you usually see me walking, driving, and or speaking to my tourists at a historical site or activity that we are taking part in. At the end of the tour day, I end up at my hotel or at home, eat some dinner, and plop down onto the couch or favorite chair. While the TV may be on, or with music in the background, I soon find my way to that great couch potato land that we all know so well. However thanks to the Coronavirus I no longer have to feel that I'm just lying around. Now, I can lie on the couch or sit in my favorite chair and get educated! I am amazed and thankful for all the different online lectures and videos that are out there. It seems that everyone has come out of the woodwork and wants to teach me something. Be it Facebook Live, Zoom, UTUBE, etc. I am learning more today than I have since I was in college in the USA and or Tour Guide school here in Israel.

In between the lectures, I actually get off the couch. If the weather is nice I go out for a long walk in my neighborhood (not more than 100 meters) or climb onto my elliptical bike and exercise in the house. In the evening I am so tired from the exercise and lectures that I lie on the couch, put on my headphones, and listen to some really great music or watch TV. Earlier today I even sat in my garden and listened to a lecture while sitting beneath a tree. Education was never so relaxing!

Most people have drifted off to sleep on the couch at least once, and some people may choose to regularly sleep on the couch instead of in a bed. While sleeping on the couch appears comfortable at first glance, it may not be the best choice in the long term. We examine whether you can make couch sleeping work for you, or if it is something you should avoid altogether.

Although sleeping on a mattress is usually the best option, occasionally sleeping on the couch may be appropriate in certain situations. Perhaps the bedroom becomes too hot or too cold at times, while the living room remains a comfortable temperature. Maybe you like to watch TV in the evening, and you doze off before making your way to the bedroom.

You might also opt to sleep on the couch in order to minimize sleep disturbances for your partner or to accommodate out-of-town guests. People with limited mobility may find it easier to stay on the couch rather than make their way to the bedroom, especially if the bedroom is upstairs.

Even though sleeping on a couch may make elevating your head easier, it is important to note that you may be better off purchasing a wedge pillow or bed risers instead of moving from your mattress to the couch.

People primarily sleep on mattresses instead of couches for a reason. Mattresses are specifically designed for sleeping, which involves lying down for several hours on a nightly basis. Couches are not crafted to offer overnight support for sleepers.

Whether twin size, full size, queen size, or king size, the width of a bed is greater than the depth of the average couch. Switching from a bed to a couch could restrict a sleeper's ability to roll over or adjust sleeping positions during the night. On average, sleepers shift positions Trusted Source National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. The length of most beds also exceeds the width of most couches. For this reason, you might be unable to fully extend your legs while sleeping on a couch. Being forced to sleep in a cramped position might lead to discomfort or pain.

Even feeding an infant on the couch in the evening poses a risk because parents might accidentally fall asleep.

Since couches are designed for sitting and not sleeping, they might not adequately support sleepers.

Stomach sleepers may find it virtually impossible to sleep on a couch, as the armrests cause the neck to twist at an excessively sharp angle. Research also suggests that when back sleeping, symmetry is important to prevent neck pain Trusted Source National Library of Medicine, Biotech Information The National Center for Biotechnology Information advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. On a couch, back sleepers might lack the space required to easily keep both arms in the same position. If couch sleeping leads to an asymmetrical sleeping position, it could contribute to neck and shoulder pain.

Side sleeping may be the most comfortable position on a couch. The armrest can act as a high pillow, and a softer couch may prevent pressure points from forming. However, on a short couch, you may need to keep your knees bent, which may cause joint pressure.

Sleeping on the couch is particularly problematic if it is accompanied by watching television.
